Carlo Ancelotti praised Kylian Mbappé for his “dangerous” performance following Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Getafe on Sunday, particularly after the forward had faced criticism for his recent form. Ancelotti described Mbappé’s stunning goal as exactly what the team wanted from him.
Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a penalty in the 30th minute and then assisted Mbappé for the second just eight minutes later, with the Frenchman finishing from distance. The win left Madrid just a point behind La Liga leaders Barcelona, with a game in hand.
“[Mbappé] was dangerous as always,” Ancelotti said in his post-match interview. “He scored an important goal that helped us control the game better, and he had chances in the second half. He was very active, and that’s what we want from him.”
Mbappé had struggled with form leading up to the game, scoring only two goals in his previous nine appearances and missing a penalty against Liverpool in midweek. However, his back-to-back league goals marked his first such streak since September.
“[It was] a relief, yes,” Ancelotti added. “At 2-0, you have more chances to win. It was a spectacular goal, fantastic. [Mbappé’s] game was very good.”
Ancelotti also commented on the support Mbappé received from the fans, stating, “The fans understand more than anyone else what the moment of the team and the players is. They supported Mbappé, which is fair.”
As for Bellingham, Ancelotti confirmed the midfielder had been substituted at halftime due to neck discomfort, but he downplayed concerns over the injury. “I think he’ll recover in a few days,” he said.
Madrid will next face Athletic Club in La Liga on Wednesday, followed by a trip to Girona on Saturday, before resuming Champions League action away to Atalanta.
